Painting

Painting is the newest direction in my creative career, although my approach to it is shaped by four decades of working across the arts. My current focus is on botanical subjects, using simplified forms, restricted colour, negative space and expressive mark-making to explore what can be conveyed through reduction rather than detail.

I am interested in the space between observation and interpretation - taking something familiar and finding a different way to see and represent it. Alongside botanical painting, I am exploring landscape and portraiture as ways of testing different approaches to composition, colour, form and emotional connection.

My process is experimental, with ongoing exploration of materials, surfaces, scale and ways of making marks. I work primarily in oils, while also experimenting with acrylics and different tools and techniques.

My background in dance, choreography and photography continues to influence how I approach painting. I think about composition, rhythm, movement, stillness and the relationship between positive and negative space. At this stage, I am deliberately allowing the work to evolve, following curiosity and experimentation rather than trying to define a style too soon.
